Common Overlooked Health Problems in Pets

As a veterinarian, I frequently encounter cases where seemingly minor issues in pets turn out to be significant health concerns that have been overlooked by their owners. While caring for our beloved companions involves regular check-ups and attention to their well-being, there are several common problems that often go unnoticed until they become more serious. Here are some of the key issues that pet owners should be aware of:

1. Ear Infections

Ear infections are surprisingly common in pets, especially in breeds with floppy ears or those that swim frequently. Ear infections are also commonly associated with allergies to food or environmental triggers. Dogs and cats can suffer from both bacterial and yeast infections in their ears, leading to pain, itching, and sometimes a foul odor. Ear infections can also lead to ear flap damage (swelling with fluid called a hematoma) from excessive head shaking. Left untreated infections can progress to causing irreversible ear damage, neurologic problems, and even hearing loss. Owners may not always notice the early signs, such as increased scratching at the ears, odor, dark or waxy discharge build-up or head shaking. Check your pet’s ears regularly for these signs and have their ears checked if they seem itchy. Early detection and treatment are key for minimizing damage.

2. Allergies

Pets can develop allergies to various substances including pollen, dust mites, certain foods, and even flea bites. Allergic reactions in pets often manifest as skin problems such as itching, redness, hot spots, dry skin, or recurrent infections. If your pet licks their paws, itches often, has red skin or you see brown-red discoloration of their fur, they may have allergies. Skin infections, ear infections and discomfort are common results of uncontrolled allergies. Veterinary guidance can help manage allergies through dietary changes, medications, or allergen avoidance strategies.

3. Overfeeding and Obesity

Overfeeding and obesity are significant health concerns for pets, contributing to a range of serious conditions such as diabetes, joint problems, injury, and breathing problems. Many owners unintentionally overfeed their pets, either by providing too much food or by offering high-calorie treats too frequently. Learn to evaluate your pet’s body condition score and track their weight outside of vet visits to keep them in the healthiest range. Maintaining a healthy weight through balanced nutrition and regular exercise is crucial for preventing obesity-related health issues and promoting a longer, happier life for pets.

4. Dental Disease

Dental hygiene is often neglected in pets, yet oral health problems are extremely common and can have serious consequences. Dark or beige build on the teeth, red gums and bad breath are clues there may be a problem. Plaque and tartar buildup can lead to gum inflammation (gingivitis), tooth decay, and even tooth loss if left untreated. Dental disease not only causes discomfort and pain but can also affect a pet’s overall health, potentially leading to infections that spread to other organs. Regular dental check-ups, professional cleanings, and at-home dental care are essential for maintaining good oral hygiene in pets.
